Diabetes

Personalised dietary advice to help you to manage your diabetes with your lifestyle; improved blood glucose control is integral to ensuring longevity.

Nutritional advice that is practical and personal makes a significant difference when it comes to managing your diabetes. Understanding how much food, especially how much carbohydrate, to eat relative to you daily medication, meal pattern, as well as blood glucose levels, is integral to helping you to achieve longevity.

Whether you are newly diagnosed or you have been a diabetic for many years, there is always something new to learn about how the food that you eat can positively impact on your diabetes management. We teach you how to adapt your lifestyle in the way that you shop for and prepare food. We aim to include as many of your favourite family meals and preferred foods as possible. That way you are not having to prepare separate meals but can include the rest of your family on your healthy journey.

You may need to tweak the timing of your insulin with your meals in order to see an improvement or you may need to test your blood sugar levels at the right time to know how to adjust your food portions. Each time that you change your diabetic treatment, you may need to make simple adjustments to your diet to further enhance the improvements in your blood glucose levels or to ensure that you do not suffer from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Either way, we will work with you to help you to find the best way to eat with the overall goal of improved blood glucose control.

Medical aids are constantly offering new programs to diabetics that cover a consultation with a dietitian each year at no additional cost to you. It is a worthwhile investment to your long-term health to make use of these so that you can stay up to date. These programs may be reviewed annually so please discuss this with us.

We are accredited with the following diabetes management programs:

  •         CDE (Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology)
  •         Discovery Diabetes Care (only through Discovery Premier GPs)
  •         Bonitas Diabetes Program

Many medical aids cover one dietitian consult per year as a PMB (Prescribed Minimum Benefit) under diabetes as a chronic condition, separate to your medical aid savings account. Just make sure that you are registered for diabetes as a chronic condition and ask if your scheme covers a dietitian consult with PMB.
