Chocolate sauce is everyone’s favourite; particularly my husband’s when poured over vanilla ice cream. Typically chocolate sauces contain cream and lots of chocolate. These ingredients make the sauce high in fat and as a result extremely energy dense. Making a chocolate sauce with a reduced energy content can be useful for someone who is trying to lose or maintain their weight, but who feels like a treat! See this recipe below.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Stove Top Time: 5 – 10 minutes
Serves: 5 – 6 portions

22g Cocoa powder
85g Sugar
15g Corn flour
1ml Salt
5ml Vanilla essence
60ml Water
200ml Boiling fat free milk

Add the cocoa powder, sugar, corn flour, salt, vanilla essence and water to a 20cm pot. Mix them together to form a smooth paste.
Slowly add the milk, stirring continuously.
Place the pot on the stove top. Stir the sauce continuously while it is cooking.
Remove the pot form the stove once the sauce is thickened.

To Serve:
Pour over absolutely anything that tickles your fancy or simply eat on its own.

Xylitol can be used in place of the sugar to lower the energy content of the sauce even further.
